I have read many articles over the growing years about air quality both inside our homes and outside. I never thought about the effects that indoor pollution can cause, especially for sensitize people. When my doctor muscle tested me and came up with some common toxins found in my homes air it made me question how healthy my house really is.

So, What causes indoor air pollution?

Indoor pollution sources that release gases or particles into the air are the primary cause of indoor air quality problems in homes. Bad ventilation can increase indoor pollutant levels by not bringing in enough outdoor air to dilute emissions from indoor sources and by not carrying indoor air pollutants out of the home. High temperature and humidity levels can also increase concentrations of some pollutants.

What contributes to indoor pollution?

Most of our indoor pollution is a combination of many factors. We have the central air that comes in the house like when we open the door, and pollutants that seep into our home from our car. There are other things to consider too. The products you use to clean immensely effects what is put out into your homes air. The products you use for own personal hygiene effect the air; perfumes, shampoos. Even certain granites that may produce radon can contribute to pollution. An over looked item that we use in our homes to control the odors and smells in the house are air fresheners. If you use these in your home make sure to use a all natural 100% pure essential oil.

What can you do to help your home eliminate the pollutants?

One of the best ways and also the simplest is to open your windows. It may seem hard to do when it is either cold outside or hot, but if you can do it at least an hour a day you are better ahead. It is especially important if you just painted a room or your walls in your home. Use indoor plants that help the home take out the toxins in the air. Here is a general list.

Palms
Ferns
Peace lilies
Spider plants
Chrysanthemums
Ivy
Dracaena

A good check list to consider when combing your house for other pollutants are:

-    Check your homes central air filters if it has one. This is very simply and cheap way to keep pollutants away.
-    If your looking for new home textiles whether it be drapes, cabinets, or couches make sure to find a product that does not use formaldehyde.

-   If your family is thinking about painting the interior of the house make sure to check in with paint brands that are low in VOCs, or paints that are no VOCs, such as Devine Green Breathable Wall Finish.

-   Check your fireplace. This can be a source of carbon monoxide and combustion pollutants. Simple remedy is open the flue when using the fireplace. Have the flue and chimney inspected yearly for exhaust back drafting, flue obstructions or cracks, excess creosote or other damage. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

When looking at your home do not worry about ever detail, but just be mindful of certain areas that may occasionally need attention when cleaning, or when installing. Be conscious of the products that you use and you and your home will stay quit happy!
