The list of benefits these little helpers offer the body are growing by the day. Probiotics have become one of the nations most popular supplement. Here are a few reasons why we love them.

- Giving soon-to-be mothers and newborns doses of “good” bacteria may help prevent childhood allergies, new research suggests. Allergy experts say they offer the first good evidence that harmless bacteria can train infants’ immune systems to resist allergic reactions. (The Lancet, April 7)

- Researchers in Japan report that mice given a nasal spray containing the “good” bacteria Lactobacillus casei found in human intestines were more likely to survive a serious bout of the flu and showed less influenza activity. (Clinical and Diagnostic Laboratory Immunology May)

- Supplements containing two different strains of lactobacillus, bacteria commonly found in yogurt, can help ease bouts of severe diarrhea in children and reduce their hospital stays. (The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal)

- High doses of probiotics, the beneficial bacteria that naturally lives in the intestinal tract, help control pouchitis, an inflammation of the small intestine common in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. (Gastroenterology August)

- A new study showed that employees who take probiotics on a daily basis would miss less work time from common illnesses such as colds or gastroenteritis. (Environmental Health: A Global Access Science Source)

- Probiotics may also be able to maintain urinary health. Just like the intestinal tract, a woman’s vagina is a delicately balanced system. Lactobacilli strains usually make the environment much too acidic for harmful bacteria to exist, but that balance can be upset by any number of factors- antibiotic use, spermicide, and even contraceptives. Probiotic supplementation can restore the numbers of beneficial bacteria, and thus combat problems such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, and urinary infection. (imithome.org)

- A study by researchers in Argentina, who are investigating whether milk fermented with lactic acid bacteria can reduce amounts of cancer-causing substances in your intestine. (Yahoo News)
