“Strength of character means the ability to overcome resentment against others, to hide hurt feelings, and to forgive quickly.”

Anger, resent, and frustration are not qualities that any one of us wants to hold within. However, when someone betrays you it is hard not to hold those feelings. It is important to look at the situation that force you to experience resent and hurt. Often there is a lesson to this situation, and a reason for it to happen. Remembering there is a reason can often help you forgive and become stronger. Hurting people for the sack of their benefit is also hard to forgive, but remember you become a stronger being because of it. You taking control of your anger and hurt are very empowering, and often make you become the bigger person.  You do not have to forgive your offender face to face; simple acknowledgment is all you need.

Tips to help you forgive:

1.    Forgiveness is a process that can take some time to happen. It is important to commit some time to it so that you can heal. It will happen with time.

2.    It is always important to try to view the situation from the other side. Consider all the possible reasons why they acted as they did (such as experiences in their childhood, lack of awareness, emotional or mental instability, possession, etc.). Try to feel compassion; those this is hard it requires you to be selfless to the experience.

3.    Accept that whatever happened may be something you chose, on a karmic, spiritual level, to experience. Take responsibility for your part of what happened “to you.”

4.    Forgive, but don’t forget. Be compassionate, yet stand your ground.

5. Don’t decide to not forgive. It is important in every situation to forgive no matter how bad it hurt.

6.    Remember to always forgive yourself.
