Today, I talked with my younger brother who happened to spend his Saturday volunteering at Providence Children’s Hospital. His private high school has mandatory service that is required in order to graduate. Now, to some people the idea of giving up your Saturday to give your time to others who need assistance may be a challenge. However, I found it inspiring that a younger generation is willing to continue the dedication of their help to others. Although this was a mandatory day that my brother had to do service, he has decided to continue his volunteering.

I think that we often forget that most of us got help from others who volunteered their time to us. Since I am a big believer in karma I see the difference the experience of providing service can bring to someone. I have seen children who grew up in challenging situations turn their life around from volunteer opportunities. I have seen sick children heal and overcome their illness through those that take the time to visit them. I think this list can go on. But, I’d like to list just a few simple reasons why you should volunteer your time, even if you don’t feel you have a lot of time to give. I also recommend checking out SeedANeed.com. I have used their site and recommended it to many others.

Top 6 Reasons To Volunteer Your Time

1. Making a positive impact. If you have ever watched Pay It Forward, you will understand the significance a small service can make such a huge impact. I have had days that were not going well, and a perfect stranger genuinely smiles. That’s it, that’s all it takes. That doesn’t take much time and it is a great start to other services. It also makes a positive impact on another person.

2. Gain knowledge. Sometimes when you start a volunteer project you think the service or project is going to go a certain way, but when you get into it you realize you gain way more. You not only get to show your talents to others, but you gain knowledge about the world and about life.

3. Improve Self Esteem. Like I mentioned above I have seen people with very unfortunate backgrounds thrive when they give service as well as when they receive service. Getting involved builds self esteem, self image, and confidence. Service puts you in a place that people are not going to judge you, or look down on you.

4. You get to meet new people. This is a great reason. We always want to have the opportunity to meet others who have the same positive view and same drive to do good. If you volunteer at some of the larger organizations you will get to meet many great people.

5. Make your world a better place. If you see problems in your community that you feel need addressing, do something about it. By providing your time, you do make a difference and help make the world a better place.

6. You’ll have fun. Volunteering will bring nothing but joy and hope to your life. It is always a great way to have fun and share your fun with others.
