I had the opportunity to witness a rolfing massage session with a friend. Though I have not had a personal session with this particular massage I have been told that the benefits out way that of your standard massage. If you are like many people who spend much of your time at a desk all day you may benefit from this experience.
So, what is the difference between the two? Massage helps relieve tension, alleviates soft tissue pain, and improves mental state. Rolfing goes further to actually change the structure of the body to correct the sources of tension, so that the tension is unnecessary and the body and spirit are essentially improved.
Poor posture and poor alignment is learned over the years. Our muscle fibers react to an injury and we might favor that injured part of the body. We might favor the injury long after the injury has healed because the fibers retain a long memory of the injury. Rolfing helps to change the structure of the connective fascia to regain alignment and structure.
