Ways To Make Your Home Green
August 19th, 2009 By: Brittany

This handy list of how to make your home more green as well as healthier is from PathNet.Org. They have 10 great ideas to help you achieve cost effective home ideas on the green.
1. Use CFLs
Replace your incandescent light bulbs (the cheap ones you probably got at the grocery store) with ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). By replacing even your five most frequently used light bulbs, you’ll save $100 per year. If every family in the U.S.A. did this, greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced by one trillion pounds–there are 12 zeros in a trillion! More on energy-efficient lighting.
2. Program Your Thermostats
Save 10% on your heating and cooling costs just by setting your thermostat back when you’re not home and while you’re sleeping. Program your thermostat to 78 degrees F or higher in the summer and 62 degrees F or lower in the winter. If you tell it to return to your preferred temperature before you return home, you won’t ever know the temperature changed, until you look at the reduction in your energy bills. Select ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostats.

Hughie of Australia has designed a cool new product to address the current water shortage down under. Named “Product of the Year 2008” the Hughie Sink works on the idea of waste-water recycling. The Hughie removable sink captures 80% of the grey water that would normally be wasted down the drain, allowing you to put it to good use in the garden, to wash your car, or for other situations around the house. Hospital’s Using More Natural Post-Natal Products
August 2nd, 2009 By: Brittany
I had to post this article written by the Chicago Tribune here because I like to see that hospital’s are changing their products to a more natural based line. This particular product used at this hospital happens to be Earth Mama Angel Baby products that I find a great choice for mother and baby.
Hospital switches to natural products
Goodbye Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. Hello Earth Mama.
Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital has discontinued handing our free infant formula samples to new moms unless you’ve specifically requested the products in writing.
Instead, the parting gift is a bag stuffed with organic personal care products—including natural nipple butter if you’re breast feeding– that have no artificial preservatives, fragrances and dyes. The brand the hospital is using—Earth Mama Angel Baby—is “100 percent toxin-free, cruelty-free and vegan,” officials said.

Cheap Ways To Go Green
July 29th, 2009 By: Brittany

Plant it Forward
Can there ever to be much green to go around. I don’t think so personally. Like many of our community members I am looking to use greener products and buy greener foods for my family. Going green does not mean you have to max out your money on products that are more expensive, in fact there are plenty of ways and plenty of items that are cheap ways to save your green.
These ideas come from Kiplinger
Replacing your light bulbs with compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs) can save you 50% on your annual lighting bill. If every U.S. household did this, it would prevent the release of as much greenhouse gas as removing 8 million cars from the road for a year. The nonprofit Energy Federation sells CFLs for less than most retailers, at $3 to $10 each.
Eat fresh. Buy produce from local farmers rather than at the grocery store. These foods are fresher and cleaner then most standard stories. LocalHarvest lets you search for farms and farmers markets by zip code.
Use a programmable thermostat. This is a cheap and easy fix to bring down your energy usage. You can get one for about $30 and it can save you more than $100 a year on your energy bills. There’s no reason to heat or cool and empty house, so set your thermostat to kick on just when you’ll be around. If just one household in 10 did this, the change would prevent more than 17 billion pounds of greenhouse gases, according to the Energy Star Action Guide.
