Healthy Fruit of the Month
No summer is official until we full out the wonderful fresh strawberries. Here in Oregon we have many great local and organic strawberry farmers. So what is so great about this delicious fruit?
According to Strawberriesweb.com
Like many other berries, strawberries contain high amounts of antioxidants, in particular anthocyanins type 2 and ellagitannins. These pigments are responsible for strawberries’ red color, as well as their powerful oxygen quenching capabilities.Antioxidants like anthocyanins have been shown by several studies to be effective in reducing risks of developing cancer, cardiovascular disease and inflammation-related diseases.
A study published in the Archives of Ophtalmology involving 110,000 subjects of both sexes evaluated the effects of consuming fruits, vegetables, antioxidant vitamins such as A,C and E and carotenoids on the risk of developing Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
